Deep within Peru's Andes lies the Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yánesha Biosphere Reserve (BIOAY) – a region of breathtaking biodiversity where Wautauga Bay sources truly unique coffee. Here, coffee thrives naturally, cultivated using traditional shade-grown methods under the protective canopy of native trees.
Superior Flavor: Unlike sun-exposed monoculture farms, the forest canopy creates a cooler, more humid microclimate. This allows coffee cherries to mature slowly, developing the complex, nuanced flavors sought by discerning palates. Thriving Ecosystem: This practice fosters incredible biodiversity, providing vital habitat for wildlife and contributing to the health of the entire ecosystem. BIOAY is a vibrant jungle environment that naturally nurtures the coffee plants.Naturally Cultivated:The coffee grows organically within this protected reserve, without the need for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. The jungle ecosystem essentially cares for itself and the coffee within it.
We work directly with smallholder farmers cultivating micro-lots, often on land less than 15 hectares. While their methods align perfectly with organic principles, the significant cost of formal organic certification presents a substantial barrier for these small-scale producers. Therefore, while not officially certified, you can be assured that Wautauga Bay offers coffee grown naturally and sustainably in one of Peru's most precious environments. We pride ourselves on bringing you these exceptional, ecologically-sound coffees directly from the source.
